| Taiwan's first science museum: the National Museum of Natural Science

Located in Taichung, the National Museum of Natural Science gathers representative natural specimens from across the country along with the research behind them. Its displays span astronomy, physics, palaeontology, zoology and anthropology. Alongside the must-see star dinosaur models, there are plenty of engaging interactive installations that invite visitors young and old into the world of natural science through play!

▲ With a guide to lead the way, you can dig deeper into the thinking behind each themed section and what the objects on display really mean!

▲ Dinosaurs tucked away among the trees in the outdoor area make it feel like a real-life Jurassic Park.

| Life Science Hall — Dinosaur Gallery

Stepping into the Dinosaur Gallery of the museum's Life Science Hall is like walking into the Jurassic world itself. The gallery displays a number of precious dinosaur fossils and complete skeletons, including the first large T. rex model seen in Taiwan, recreating the sheer presence of these prehistoric giants. Through interactive displays, reconstructed models and dynamic audiovisuals, you can explore how dinosaurs evolved, how they lived and how they came to disappear. Visitors of every age can uncover the mysteries of life here and feel the grandeur and wonder of the age of dinosaurs — a hugely popular gallery that families and natural science enthusiasts should not miss.

▲ The museum's most popular dinosaur model measures a full 7 metres in length, and not only moves but roars as well — so lifelike that children love it and fear it in equal measure!

▲ Standing as tall as a five-storey building, the Brachiosaurus used its long neck to reach leaves at the very tops of the trees; it belongs to the sauropod family.

| Life Science Hall

Where did humankind come from? And how has nature brought forth life? The museum's Life Science Hall uses 13 display areas to present the phenomena of the natural world and the dynamics of evolution. Beginning with the origins of life, it vividly introduces the emergence of every kind of living form — and includes a treasure coveted by museums the world over, an important piece of ancient Egyptian culture: a mummy, offering a glimpse into the mysterious afterlife in which body and soul lived on together!

▲ The Palaeoloxodon in the Sunlight Corridor is a replica elephant specimen made from fossils collected in the Penghu Channel!

▲ From prehistory to the present day, the Life Science Hall uses the idea of evolution to introduce the wonder of "existence" across hundreds of millions of years of the natural world!

| Human Cultures Hall — the wisdom of everyday life in ages past!

The museum's Human Cultures Hall covers seven themes: Chinese medicine, Chinese science and technology, agricultural ecology, storytelling in ancient times, the spiritual life of the Han people, Taiwan's Austronesian peoples, and Oceania. As well as marvelling at the inventiveness of earlier generations, you come away with a sense of how human culture has changed over time!

▲ The Water-Powered Astronomical Clock Tower on display at the museum was reconstructed from the writings of Su Song, a scientist of the Northern Song dynasty. It is the world's first fully functioning full-scale replica! (It has three levels; pictured is the armillary sphere at the top.)

▲ Wanfu Temple is the first architectural acquisition in Taiwan to be displayed suspended in mid-air, bringing an entire temple indoors!

| Global Environment Hall — what does the Earth really look like?

Do you know what the world looks like under a microscope? Have you ever seen the largest deep-sea squid on Earth? In the Global Environment Hall you can get to know the planet we live on from a range of different perspectives, and come away with a keener sense of how small we are — and how precious the Earth is!

▲ Seven strikingly realistic dioramas present the Earth's ecosystems — no need to travel the world to feel the thrill of just how vast and full of wonders it is!

| Fantastic Nature Gallery

Stepping into the Fantastic Nature Gallery at Taichung's National Museum of Natural Science is like setting off on a journey of natural magic! From the humid air of the tropical rainforest to the bitter cold of the polar ice, the gallery creates a range of ecological environments as immersive settings, combining light and sound interaction with lifelike plant and animal models so that you can experience the magnificence and mystery of nature first-hand. A variety of teaching aids and hands-on designs introduce visitors to climate, ecology, evolution and other natural phenomena, sparking respect and curiosity for the environment and for life itself — an excellent gallery for families, where learning and play go hand in hand.

▲ Special techniques recreate animals in mid-stride, full of life and movement!

▲ Cetacean skeleton models hang from the gallery ceiling, with lighting used to evoke the ocean.

▲ The egg is where life begins. The Fantastic Nature Gallery, refreshed in 2024, displays a number of egg specimens, with interactive installations that let you watch an egg hatch and grow into a bird.

| Marine Conservation Center

Delve into the mysteries of the sea, from the ecology of Taiwan's own waters to global marine environmental issues. Through a wealth of specimens, interactive installations and faithfully recreated settings, the Marine Conservation Center helps visitors understand both the diversity and the fragility of marine life. From strikingly lifelike cetacean models to moving conservation stories, everything here reminds us to cherish the ocean and protect our blue planet. It makes for a journey full of knowledge and feeling!

▲ On the second floor of the exhibition building, the Marine Conservation Center displays a 1:1 model of a white dolphin along with cetacean skeleton specimens, in the hope of encouraging more people to "get close to the sea, know the sea and love the sea" — and to join in protecting it!

| Botanical Garden — Taiwan's largest tropical rainforest glasshouse!

Covering around 4.5 hectares, the Botanical Garden takes the distinctive ecology of Taiwan's low-altitude regions and the tropical rainforest as its themes, with carefully chosen and closely studied landscapes recreating several of Taiwan's representative ecological zones. The garden and glasshouse together hold more than 800 plant species, and whatever the season, there is always something in bloom!

▲ A green miracle in the middle of the city! Explore a glasshouse that recreates the tropical rainforest right in the city centre.

▲ Step inside the 40-metre-high glasshouse and you could almost be in the Amazon, with more than 500 tropical plant species and a cascading waterfall!

| Science Center — learn science through play!

The Science Center is designed to encourage visitors to get hands-on and take an active part. Through interactive displays and activities, it sparks curiosity, offering a scientific grounding through doing, scientific knowledge through play, and the mysteries of nature through exploration.

The centre has a wide range of interactive installations suitable for all ages, and is especially recommended for families.

▲ The newly created "World of Physics" covers electromagnetism, kinematics, mechanics, fluid dynamics, waves, modern physics, optics and more. Adults and children alike can build a real sense of achievement in their scientific understanding through all kinds of observation and hands-on experience!

▲ At "Dada's Magic Park", interactive installations let you experience the refraction and reflection of light and the mixing of colours, and feel the marvellous ways light and shadow shift.

| Board the cardboard little train for an adventure through the wilds!

The Carton King Museum Branch is located on level B1 of the museum's third car park. Themed around the Jurassic world, it features the cardboard little train, which carries visitors through strikingly realistic large-scale dinosaur settings for an adventure through the wilds.

The branch also has an aviation-themed aircraft cabin serving a flight meal available only at this location, so you can dine in a setting straight out of a lost-world film
